The start of a new year often comes with a lot of noise. We’re told to “reset,” to “transform,” and to “become a new version” of ourselves. But at Horizon Recovery Initiative, we look at January a little differently. We don’t see it as a time to erase who you were; we see it as a time to double down on the community that sustains us.
Recovery doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It doesn’t happen just because someone reads a book or learns the science of the brain—though those things help. It happens when people feel seen, fed, and connected.
As we step into this new year, I wanted to take a moment away from the “educational” side of our blog to talk about the quiet, steady work we’re doing on the ground and why your support makes it possible.
Nourishing the Body: More Than Just a Meal
One of the core parts of our mission this past year has been our food distribution efforts. It’s a simple truth that’s often overlooked in the recovery space: You can’t focus on healing your mind if your stomach is empty.
When we host our food distributions, we aren’t just handing out bags of groceries. We’re creating a “front porch” for the community. It’s a place where someone can show up without judgment, grab what they need, and realize that their neighbors care about their well-being.
For many of our friends in BC, these distributions are the first point of contact with Horizon. It’s where the trust begins. We’ve seen that a warm conversation over a food hamper can be the very thing that gives someone the courage to ask about recovery resources later that week. In 2026, we’re looking to expand these efforts, ensuring that “recovery” starts with the basic dignity of a full plate.
Nourishing the Mind: The Power of the Newsletter
You’ve probably noticed our blog and our newsletters hitting your inbox more frequently. Some might see these as just “content,” but for someone sitting in a room feeling isolated in their struggle, these words can be a lifeline.
I’ve heard from many of you that reading about the connection between trauma and addiction, or seeing a book review that finally explains what you’re feeling, was the first time you felt “normal” in years. Our newsletter is our way of breaking the silence that addiction loves so much.
By sharing stories, local BC policy updates, and practical survival guides, we’re building a shared language. We’re making sure that no matter where you are—from the Island to the Interior—you have access to the same high-quality information and hope.
Behind the Scenes: Our Fundraisers
Everything we do—from the food on the tables to the server that hosts this website—is fueled by the community. Our fundraisers, like our “Donuts for a Cause” events, aren’t just about hitting a financial goal. They’re about showing up.
When you buy a donut or donate to a campaign, you’re sending a message to the people we serve. You’re saying, “I see you, and I believe your life is worth investing in.” That collective belief is the most powerful tool we have. In 2026, we’ve got some exciting, low-pressure, high-fun events planned to keep our programs running and our community connected.
A Different Kind of Resolution
If you’re looking for a New Year’s resolution, maybe it doesn’t have to be about a “new you.” Maybe it can be about a “more connected you.”
- It might be volunteering at one of our distribution days.
- It might be forwarding our newsletter or a blog post to a friend who is struggling.
- Or it might just be being a little kinder to yourself as you navigate your own journey.
At Horizon, our resolution is simple: We’re going to keep showing up. We’re going to keep the food moving, the stories flowing, and the doors open. We aren’t looking for “perfect” versions of our community members; we’re just looking for you.
Thank you for being part of our story. Here’s to a year of growth, one day—and one meal—at a time.
